Some say that words are very unnecessary, as they can only do harm. However in the case of an RPG, that’s clearly not always the case. In this Episode we discuss silent protagonists and compare/contrast them with voiced protagonists. Silent protagonists offer the ability to let the player self insert, while voice protagonists are actually fleshed out characters. We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of both, as well as which we prefer overall. Hope you all enjoy it!
Portraying love in a meaningful way within a videogame while also giving the player agency in how a relationship plays out is something developers have struggled with for years now. Unless a game tells a linear narrative focused on love like Silent Hill 2 or Final Fantasy VIII, often games tend to trivialize it. There’s long since been a debate as to what developers and franchises “get it right” and of course Persona is in the heart of this discussion.
In the next episode, we plan to discuss the portrayal of love both in platonic & romantic ways in Persona, and compare/contrast it with the likes of other franchises like Baldur’s Gate, Mass Effect, and whatever else may come to our minds. So if you have any questions or comments, now is the time to get them in!
After a month long hiatus since our Holiday Special, we’re finally kicking off the second season of the podcast. Didn’t mean to keep you all in the dark for that long, but December was a busy month and a break needed to be had!
One of the most distinguishing aspects of the Persona series has been the music from composer Shoji Megero. Often when someone mentions their first experiences with the games, they mention how puzzling but strangely endearing the music is. So it’s long overdue that we dedicated a episode to the music of Persona and SMT. We’ll be covering things from composition, to the strange lyrics, and of course the Persona Music Live concerts.
This week’s panel will include a number of folks with formal training in musical composition. Specifically the podcast’s composer Doug Farrell, who is the talent behind the SMT piano collections you hear on nearly every episode!
In addition to just posting questions here, please share your stories on how you first reacted to the music in Persona. Would love to hear them, and we’ll even read all them out on this episode!
The MegaTen crossover of the century is finally here, the folks from the Cathedral Of Shadows podcast joined us on the podcast this week. We discussed a whole manner of things from the SMT greater timeline, how social links should be expanded upon, and many other topics. This is a really long episode, but it’s worth it–especially if you want to hear more about the Megami Tensei lore from some really knowledgeable fans.
Also, we ran so long that Armada had to take off before we were done all the questions. So we did a little post credit section where we finished the questions. So if you didn’t hear your question answered right away–be sure to listen to the whole recording!
Special thanks to Armada for the amazing Intro he made for this episode. Also many thanks to TrueSelf for making the incredible banner image.

Marvel vs. Capcom, Alien vs. Predator, King Kong vs. Godzilla, Street Fight X Tekken–who doesn’t love a good crossover? This Friday, our little podcast is going to be apart of the next big crossover: S.Link FM and Cathedral of Shadows. If you’re not familiar with Cathedral of Shadows–they’re a Shin Megami Tensei podcast, and we’ve been talking about doing a crossover show for a while now. Be sure to check out their podcast here.
The topic of this episode if going to be Persona, MegaTen, and the endless silly clashing between the fandoms. Obviously there’s a lot of ground to cover but more than anything we’ll probably be discussing when sets every MegaTen series apart from eachother.
So if you have any questions about the greater SMT lexicon, now’s the time to ask. The Cathedral of Shadows folks are obviously really knowledgeable in that department!
After nearly a month’s absence, we’re finally back with Episode 14! One of the reasons its been a while since we recorded an episode is because Levito was in Seattle for PAX Prime. So we thought we should do a Casual Saturdays recapping the event! We touch on things like Titanfall, the new consoles, and even get back on topic with Persona cosplay discussion.
Again, off topic episode. So if you want something more Persona related, hold off till Episode 15 which is recording next friday.
Hello, I’m ScraftyDevil, and I’d like to introduce all you to the newest addition to S. Link FM: Scrafty and PK’s Excellent Adventure! PK and I are both enthusiastic members of PersonaGAF, and one day we had the crazy idea to do a Let’s Play of Persona 3 FES together for kicks and giggles. Since S. Link FM has such a wonderful and devoted audience, we though we’d share it here for all of you. Starting next week, we’ll be posting weekly updates on our progress, but you can catch up on the action every day by subscribing to Devil’s Wild Card on YouTube. We’re aware that the first four episodes have some issues with volume level, but they are entirely cleared up by Episode 5 so please just adjust your volume level until then! Here are the first eight episodes of our adventure:
You can find all the previous entries in the links below:
It’s a landmark day for S.Link FM, after a tremendous amount of hype we were able to sit down and have a wonderful discussion with voice actress Karen Strassman. Karen has been among the most requested guests listeners have suggested to join us on the podcast. Obviously Karen voiced several characters in the Persona series from Aigis-the robot that longed to be human in Persona 3, to everyone’s favorite little cousin Nanako Dojima in Persona 4.(Several others too!)
Karen gave us plenty insight on how she steps into a role, not only in how she sets a character’s timbre, but also in how to have the correct mannerisms that fit said character. We also got a live demonstration of such, it was way too awesome!
It was such an honor to have Karen on, and this is easily among our best episodes-or if not, THE best episode we’ve done thus far.
Well folks, we were once again able to sit down and have a chat behind one of the voices of the Persona 4 cast. This time, Sam Riegel, who voiced Teddie in Persona 4: The Golden, Persona 4: Arena, and Persona 4: The Animation came on the show. Sam shed some light on his acting career, touched on what it was like working on the Persona projects, and gave some Beary good advice on for those looking to make it in the voice acting industry. This was a very bearable episode to record, nothing grizzly about it!
Apologies in advance that we did not get to everyone’s questions, we were on a bit of a time constraint. This episode is a lot more concise than previous ones and Sam really elaborate on the questions we did ask, so a lot of the reader questions were answered in passing anyways.
Once and a while the formalities need to be laid to rest and casual discussion needs to occur. In this episode we discussed the rumors that were surrounding a potential reveal of Persona 5 at E3 2013. We also talked about our favorite non-Persona/SMT related games from the show too. We assure you, S.Link FM is not becoming a general gaming podcast. This episode was recorded more to hold people over till the juicier episodes in the future arrive.
At long last the day has finally come, the highly anticipated 7th Episode of S.Link FM is here for all to hear. I mean, what could be more exciting than having the mind behind the kickboxing carnivore Chie Satonaka on the podcast? It’s true, immensely talented voice actress Erin Fitzgerald was here to school us with her vast assortment of knowledge. We talked about linguistics, the voice over industry, and most importantly steak. So enjoy this one, we had an absolute blast recording it.
Episode 6 is finally here! This one is all about Persona 4: Arena, the competitive scene surrounding it and fighting games at large. Our panel consists of Levito and Armada, with GAF’s own fighting game enthusiast MotheHawk and pro fighting game player, Dacidbro. We talk all about the FGC, overcoming competitive gaming anxiety, the differences between the various fighting game genres. Dacidbro and MotheHawk give comprehensive detail on the mechanics of Persona 4: Arena. Don’t think, feel!
Dacidbro also live streamed the whole show, which you can watch here.
Over the past few days we’ve been bombarded with a plethora of positive feedback over our most recent episode Mind Games and I can’t thank you enough for it. The Podcast has grown exponentially in only a few short weeks and it’s very humbling, than you all so much for listening to it! Now it’s time to move on to the exciting announcements.
First off, S.Link FM is now officially available on the itunes store! It was long overdo, but now you can easily search and subscribe to the show on itunes. Hopefully this will help us reach a wider audience and make it easier to find the podcast in general.
Now we’re also restructuring the podcast a bit, and we’ve decided to use a different arrangement of music. The show station ID created by Jintor will remain, but Electronica in the Velvet room will not be in future episodes. However the incredibly talented Doug Farrell has been kind enough to allow us to use his SMT arrangements from now on. You can check out his stuff on his website here, or check out his SMT arrangements on his Youtube channel. Can’t thank Doug enough for allowing S.Link FM to feature his music, check out a sample below!
As for future episode plans, we’ve got some really exciting stuff to announce:
First off, the competitive fighting game legend Dacidbro will be be joining us on Episode 6. We plan to go over Persona 4: Arena’s competitive scene, the competitive Catherine movement, and where to get started with fighting games in general. That Episode will be recording on the 17th and will be available soon after.
We’re still working on the details for this next one, but in the near future we are very happy to announce that voice actress Erin Fitzgerald will be joining us on the Podcast! Erin voiced Chie Satonaka in Persona 4 The Golden, Persona 4 Arena, and Persona 4 The Animation. We’re overjoyed that Erin is willing to come chat with us about her career as a voice actress, and more specifically about her role as Chie in Persona. More details about that episode in the coming days.
Finally we’ll be taking your questions on the podcast from now on, so next Monday I’ll put up a questions post for Episode 6 with DacidBro. Hope you all have some good stuff ready for Dacidbro!
The occult has always been a huge part of Shin Megami Tensei, and therefore also a huge part of the Persona series. In Episode 5 of S.Link FM, we delve into the theology, mysticism, tarot influence, philosophy and myriad of topics pertaining to the ridiculous amount of detail that goes into the SMT games. Joined by resident SMT/Persona Keeper of Knowledge cj_iwakura, psychotherapist venfayth, and theological/philosophical enthusiast ScraftyDevil, this was a heavy discussion, but ultimately one of our best yet, hope you enjoy listening.
This has been quite the week for S.Link FM, after all the site has now officially been up and active for a week! (Well thereabouts anyways)
We actually got quite a bit of traffic this week, seeing that the podcast was shared all over sites like 4chan, reddit, Penny Arcade, and of course NeoGAF is very encouraging. I’m sure that shidoshi sharing the LGBT diversity episode also helped quite a bit as well, that was probably our best episode to date. Not to mention getting out 2 episodes within 5 days of each other probably helped a bunch too!
So on to the future, currently we have a few ideas for new shows:
Exploring the mysticism and philosophy behind the series and the various Persona’s
A look at the competitive fighting scene behind P4: Arena with a special guest we have lined up
A look at the events in P4: Arena’s story mode and the impact it’s had on the overarching Persona storyline
We’re open to suggestions and requests from the listeners as to what particular topics you’d like to hear us discuss, in fact if there’s something you’d like to come on to the podcast yourself and discuss, then by all means please do! Contacts us by either leaving a comment, tweeting us @SLinkFM, or email us at email@example.com. We’re always open to bringing on fellow SMT/Persona fans!
Finally, yes we know the site is not very easy on the eyes currently. Thankfully though, some incredibly talented artist’s working on banners, backgrounds, and show title cards for us.
I’m going to be on vacation for the next week so if I don’t get back to you right away don’t worry about it, in time I will get back to you.
On episode 4 of S.Link FM, we discuss the various anime adaptions of the Persona franchise. Firstly our panel gives a brief history of our experience with the Anime medium, where we’re pretty all over the place. CJKeats being the Anime connoisseur of the group, and the only one brave enough to watch Persona Trinity Soul. From there we tackle Persona 4: The Animation, and the upcoming Persona 3 movies. Most of the discussion spotlight was on the Persona 4 anime, and our general feelings on how it handled the story, plot, and characters from the game.
The S.Link FM podcast rises to the top of a mountain made of burning questions and shared experiences to to summon a storm of LBGT topics for discussion! Is Kanji gay? Who is the Sumaru Genie? Were you guys offended by that babe hunt scene in Persona 3? Why isn’t anybody talking about the casino guys in Persona 1? Our guests shidoshi (writer for EGM, podcast legend of WAHP, and pressing issues panelist) and Inorigo (writer for GameRanx and RPGSite) lay down the knowledge and perspective you’ll need to conquer society’s many pitfalls. Lend us your ear for another S. Link FM!
As we now have an RSS feed you can now listen to and download episodes through the itunes and Zune applications. Additionally, you can stream and download directly from S.LinkFM.com now.
The S.Link FM podcast returns to speculate upon hopes, dreams, and what little “info” we have about Persona 5. Our guest Inorigo (@Talespun, writer for GameRanx and RPGSite) chimes in with some great points for your consideration. We ask questions about Persona 5’s combat, social link system, dungeons, cell phones, release date and even what console/handheld it might be on. Will our dreams come true or is S.Link FM a place where dreams go to die? You’ll just have to listen and find out!
Currently in the process of submitting the show to itunes, so we’re uploading Episode 1 & 2 onto the blog and hosting them here. Now that the show is available here on SLinkfm.com(and hopefully itunes as well) we’ve decided there’s no further need to upload to Soundcloud or Youtube now. You can stream the podcast AND directly download it from here now.
In the very first episode of S.Link FM, we decide to start things off a little casually and go over how each of us got into the Persona series. We decided to do this podcast on a whim last night so I apologize if the first episode seems disorganized. Nonetheless, we manage to talk about how great Persona 2 is, how we got into the series, Persona 4 Arena at EVO2013, Persona 5 speculation, and jello’s utilikilt.

S.Link FM is a new podcast dedicated to all things related to the critically acclaimed and cult followed Persona series. Created by members of the Persona community from NeoGAF, we intend to go over many topics surrounding the series in each episode. In addition to this, we’ll be inviting a variety of guests and members of the community to join us on future episodes, especially about subjects we feel need to be represented.
